Why call it Improv Church?
Because it’s exactly what it sounds like — an improv comedy show that happens in a church. But it’s more than that. Each show kicks off with a short message from a pastor, which then becomes the inspiration for the scenes the comedians create on the spot. No scripts. No second takes. Just pure, hilarious improv that explores the mess, joy, and humor of real life.

It’s church — but not like you’ve ever experienced it.
There’s no preaching at you, no awkward moments, no need to pretend you’ve got it all together. Just people gathering to laugh, think, and connect. Because we believe laughter is holy — and a good night of comedy can feed the soul.

At the end of the night, Communion and Prayer are offered for anyone interested. You’re invited to take part or simply observe — no pressure, just presence.

Come for the comedy. Stay for the community.
Expect the unexpected — and maybe go home laughing and with something to think about.

About Our Guest Preacher in November:

Rev. Wm. R. “Mac” McKenney entered vocational ministry in 2016 after working 24 years on Capitol Hill and 19 years as a tax lobbyist. He and his late wife, Linda, were married for nearly 40 years, and their adult children, Reid and Nora, live in Northern Virginia.

Mac received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at George Washington University in 1980 and a Master of Divinity at Wesley Theological Seminary in 2016.

Mac’s call to ministry began when he and his daughter were on a short-term, middle school mission trip in the summer of 2002. That September, he and his wife began teaching the junior high Sunday School class in their home church, Mount Olivet UMC in Arlington. The following year, he began working with the church youth group. In 2006, he took his first class at Wesley Theological Seminary to pursue certification in youth ministry. Over time, he sensed a call to a broader ministry, and in 2013 began work on an M. Div. He has a passion for teaching, preaching, congregational care, and both multicultural and intergenerational ministry.

A shameless storyteller, he believes that preaching should breathe life into the ancient words of Scripture, making them relevant in meeting the challenges of our daily lives. And he believes that the ministry of the church is to reflect God’s love in the world and to nurture all God’s children—especially the “least of these”—in a community of faith.

He loves poetry, cooking, fly-fishing, and hiking, especially in DownEast Maine.
